US and Georgia Share Community Outreach Strategies - UC Davis is hosting Sophio (Sopo) Arsenishvili, Deputy Head of the International Office at Telavi State University through IREX’s University Administration Support Program (UASP). UASP provides opportunities for university administrators from Eurasia and China to work one-on-one with a counterpart at a US university on a specific university- management topic. UC to reopen education abroad program in Israel in fall 2009 - After a review of safety issues and the means available to monitor and mitigate security risks, the University of California is in discussions with the Rothberg International School at Hebrew University of Jerusalem with the intention of reopening UC's study abroad program there as of fall 2009. $16M grant to fight childhood malnutrition connected to a seed grant from UOIP - UC Davis announced that it has received a $16 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support research to prevent childhood malnutrition in developing countries. The proposal for the grant was supported by a Seed Grant for International and Outreach Activities from University Outreach and International Programs. Four UC Davis faculty receive Fulbright Scholar Grants - Four faculty members from UC Davis have been awarded Fulbright Scholar grants for 2008-2009 to teach and conduct research in different countries. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the program aims to build a better understanding between people in the U.S. and other nations through education. Chancellor to visit Iranian universities - In his last year as chancellor of UC Davis, Larry Vanderhoef is in no way taking it easy. The long-serving chancellor embarks on his second trip to Iran tomorrow. Chancellor Vanderhoef will make the visit along with five other American university leaders as part of a delegation sponsored by the American Association of Universities. On the seven-day trip, the group will visit several Iranian universities in the interest of strengthening scientific and educational ties between the two countries. International Education Week starts today - Going international this week won't cost you a plane ticket, since UC Davis is bringing the world to campus. Beginning today through Friday, students will have a variety of oportunities to be exposed to UC Davis' international impact and ways to get involved internationally. Every year, the U.S. Department of State along with the Department of Education declares one week dedicated to promoting internationalism on university campuses. Celebrate international education; meet campus's Humphrey Fellows - UC Davis’ 2008-09 Humphrey Fellows, professionals from around the world, are scheduled to introduce themselves to the campus community during an open forum next week. Organizers said the visitors will talk about their homelands and take questions from the audience. The forum comes amid International Education Week, Nov. 17-22. Humphrey Fellows look to bring global change - Nationwide, 156 mid-career professionals from over 90 designated countries, will take part in the Humphrey Fellowship Program this year. Their destinations are 15 of the U.S.'s most prestigious universities. This year, UC Davis welcomes 11 Fellows focusing on agricultural development and environmental sciences. Each fellow builds his or her own individual program that combines non-degree study with practical experience.(California Aggie, November 14, 2008)

Number of international students at UCD slowly increasing - There are over 2,500 international students and scholars on the UC Davis campus this year - a number that has continued to grow since last year. Though many are surprised by the amount of international scholars on campus, the Institute of International Education (IIE) found that since 9/11, there has actually been a slow increase of international students and scholars. UC Davis hosts the fifth largest amount of scholars in the entire country, with Harvard, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Columbia preceding it, according to the IIE study.(California Aggie, October 7, 2008)

Writing program lecturer honored - Summer Abroad Director, Eric Schroeder, wins the James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award, given by the Academic Federation. The award, named after a former chancellor, is the federation's highest honor. (Dateline, dateline.ucdavis.edu, September 26, 2008)

Fulbright adventures abroad:Graduate students use award to pursue knowledge across the world - For the 2007-08 academic year, a record seven of 21 UC Davis applicants were offered the Fulbright award, and five accepted. Those five have been conducting research in Australia, Germany, Argentina, Mexico and Peru. For the 2008-09 year, 11 UC Davis students and graduates from among 28 applicants have been offered Fulbright awards. Taken together, the 11 propose to travel to five continents to study subjects as varied as bicycle dynamics in the Netherlands and ethnomusicology in Thailand. Alumnus Mahmoud Abu-Zeid Supports "Building Bridges" - Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, the minister of public works and water resources for Egypt and a UC Davis alumnus, has long been a supporter of collaborative opportunities with his alma mater. Abu-Zeid was recently honored with the Cal Aggie Alumni Association's Emil M. Mrak International Award for his distinguished career and service outside the United States. Abu-Zeid is confident the new initiative “Building Bridges” will greatly benefit a nation and a state that have much in common, including agriculture, climate and water. Emeritus Professor Helping Revive Academic Ties Between UC Davis and Egypt - Dick Walters, Professor Emeritus in Computer Science is helping develop collaborative agreements dealing with computer science, medicine and distance learning with institutions in the Middle East. "It just fits my life," Walters explains. "I am internationally-oriented. My background is international. My commitment to promoting international cooperation and to promoting ties between UC Davis and the Middle East is very strong."(College of Engineering, February 1, 2008)

Passage to India: Davis campus in global spotlight - The U.S. government recently launched the U.S. Electronic Fair for India to promote U.S. higher education to India. In December 2007, the videos were broadcast to millions of viewers throughout India. This innovative multimedia campaign utilizes television, the Internet, and on-ground activities to showcase U.S. higher education opportunities in the Indian market. Aggie Alumni win China Friendship Awards - UC Davis professor and food scientist Charles Shoemaker amd former Aggies Richard Reidinger and Robert Fontaine were presented China’s Friendship Award for contributing to China’s economic and social progress. (Dateline, January 11, 2008)

Editorial: Student-led Movement Yields Academic Breakthrough - Recently, UC Davis approved a new Middle Eastern and South Asian studies major, which concentrates studies in a variety of fields. Thanks to student-led efforts to establish the ME/SA major, UCD students can now enjoy many benefits.
