Local, regional,national and international examples
There are numerous excellent examples of scholarly engagement at UC Davis and universities across the country. This scholarship is conducted at the local, regional, national and international levels. The following are just a few examples at each level at UC Davis.
Local
Five student-run medical clinics provide medical advice and treatment for underserved Latino, African American, Middle Eastern, East Indian, Asian and intravenous drug users and sex workers in the Sacramento area utilizing their medical education.
Student-run law clinics focus on prison law, immigration law, and family protection locally drawing upon their legal studies.
ArtsBridge program integrates resources of the campus in service to k-12 teachers to provide high quality arts education to K-12.
Regional
UC Cooperative Extension located in every county in the state provides important knowledge and expertise for agriculture; natural resource production and management; diet and health; and youth, family, and community development.
$100 million in state contracts address practical state and local needs (e.g., energy, environment, water quality, transportation, human social services).
UC Davis provides regional leadership in clean technology with a $25 million grant to research the next generation of renewable fuels.
Biogas Energy Project utilizes solid waste biomass to create alternative energy.
California Wind Energy Collaborative, Air Quality Research Center, and the California Lighting Technology Center all combine to develop clean technology for the future.
UC Davis faculty address the many problems of the Delta, how these problems are likely to develop in the future, and evaluate a wide range of solutions.
National
California Institute for Hazards Research addresses preventing California’s and the nation’s many natural hazards from turning deadly (e.g., earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, flood).
International
Global Health Initiative (Veterinary School, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Medical School) focuses on food, health and environmental issues in Africa and Central America such as micronutrient deficiencies and HIV.
The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences rebuilds agriculture in Egypt, Afghanistan and Iraq by working with extension educators and local farmers in those countries.
Successful research universities of the 21st century must do more than generate knowledge and disseminate knowledge, it must apply that knowledge in partnership with the communities it serves to address mutually identified needs.
